It is. In the Japanese language, there are only 110 sounds you have to make compared to English's over 8,000. It's some of the things like that that I found highly interesting. I'm still trying to decide if I want to order the full version, but it sounds like it'd be fun.

Have you ever bought one of those little translation tourist book things on your travels?

 

I have, but the only word I ever looked up on the spot was the word for "Laundromat" in Spanish.

And let me tell you, don't EVER try to find a coin laundromat in Madrid!

I never had any problem with languages in other countries....as long as they spoke English....

It pissed me off when I was in France and trying to get some salt and everyone acted like they didn't know what I was talking about. Finally some girl came over and said "OHH saltz." Really? Give me break.

I speak survival spanish: Cerveza and senoritas. That will pretty much get you anywhere you would want to go in Mexico.

i speak spanish wit my family becuz that is the language that they mostly speak. . . and wen around friends i speak in english but say phrases in spanish like.
aye dios mio- oh my god
te amo- i love u
ven aqui- come here
my friends get annoyed sumtimes. lol

 

That is just my urban speak. All the cool kids are butchering words now, but only us super bad asses can butcher them in other languages.......................:smile::-| You believe me right?

 

Haha if you say so. I guess I'm just not at your level of cool enough to screw up words like a real badass, much less in a foreign language! Maybe I'll just stick to my nerdy old proper English.

If the Deutsch is a reference to my Dutch then Im sorry your wrong cause my daughter speaks DUTCH as in we lived in the Netherlands for 3 years!

I know a decent amount of Dutch, and that seems to help me understand some German too. Besides that, I remember a few bits of French and Spanish - not enough to speak either, but enough to get the gist of simple sentences.

I always do better at reading/writing than listening/speaking, though. More thinking time, I guess.

 

I can speak a lot of German (Ich kann viel Deutsch sprechen !). This is going to be my fifth year studying it. I'm hoping to be proficient in the near future.

I'd like to take up another language but I don't have a lot of time to do so. If I did I would probably either take Dutch or Swedish as they would be easy to learn knowing German and English (all of them being Germanic languages). Plus it helps that my university offers those two.

If I really had a lot of time I'd probably study Russian or Arabic.

I personally think it's good to know how to speak a little of some other languages. I mean everyone has to learn English nowadays so it's polite to know about some other major languages yourself. I might choose to immigrate to Europe some day anyway so German will be extremely useful. Besides it's just a lot of fun to be able to speak other languages.

 

Apparently the French try to pretend they don't know other languages even though a lot of them do. I guess it's just they're way of having fun lol.

I was in Vienna, Austria where they speak a different accented German that is hard to understand if you only know Hochdeutsch (High German/Standard German). I could tell all the tourists from Germany there because I could eavesdrop on they're conversations. It was impossible to tell what the locals where saying sometimes, and hard to talk to them in German as well. The older people could get a little crabby when we couldn't understand each other. Other than that people where pretty pleased that I was using German instead of English though.

 

We speak both Japanese and English at home, but i would have to say that we speak english a bit more. When my sister and I are out together, we tend to switch to Japanese so that the people around us can't understand what we're saying. It's more fun that way
