In China’s Chongqing City, One May Live A Lifetime Without Ever 'Stepping Foot On Ground Level'
China’s Chongqing city is known for its unusual and complex urban planning.

Chinese architecture never ceases to amaze, and a recent video highlights just that. A China-based influencer left viewers stunned while attempting to locate the “real" ground floor in Chongqing—a city known for its mountainous terrain and intricate multi-level urban design. The clip showcases how the city’s buildings are constructed on multiple elevations, making it challenging to pinpoint the actual ground level.
The clip begins with the influencer saying, “In Chongqing, you may spend your entire life without ever stepping foot on ground level. Today, my friend and I will try to locate the real ground floor here."

As the influencer and his friend embarked on their quest, they initially assumed they were at street level, with cars and buses passing by. However, as they navigated through various shops and reached another street, they realised they still hadn’t found the true ground level.
To their surprise, when they looked over the edge of the road, they discovered even more levels below them, revealing just how layered Chongqing’s urban landscape truly is.
As they descended further, the influencer’s friend asked, “This must be the ground floor, right?" However, the influencer quickly clarified that they were still far from it. The supposed “ground level" of an 18-storey building—with no elevator—was actually on the 12th floor, with several more levels extending beneath it.
After a long and exhausting search, they finally reach what appears to be the ground floor—built beneath a flyover. In the video, the influencer points out a striking detail: they are so far below the surface that the underside of the flyover is painted with clouds to mimic the sky.
As the video continues, the influencer points to a school in the distance, which appears to be another two to three levels lower than where they stand.
The video caption reads, “Why you might live your whole life without touching the ground floor in the city of Chongqing?"
Social media users quickly reacted to the video with amusement and disbelief. One Instagram user joked, “The problem isn’t finding the bottom, it’s climbing back up all the stairs when you’re done." Another quipped, “Y’all must have legs of steel from all the stairs. And is there a GPS app to help navigate around???" Meanwhile, someone summed it up perfectly, writing, “If I’ve learned anything from these videos, it’s that any floor in Chongqing can be the ground floor.
A person wrote, “How does Google Maps work in this place?"
The video has gathered 40 lakh views on Instagram since it was uploaded.
