Virat Kohli Overtakes Ricky Ponting To Become 3rd Leading Run Scorer In International Cricket

Kohli, who is playing his 547th international match for India on Sunday against Pakistan in Dubai, has 27,484 runs to his name now.

Batting superstar Virat Kohli, who is on fire for India in the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 match against Pakistan at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, has broken Ricky Ponting’s record of 27,483 runs to become the third leading run scorer in international cricket. The former India captain, who is playing his 547th international match on Sunday, needed 81 runs to overtake Ponting, and he achieved the objective on the last ball of the 36th over of the 242-run chase.

Only Sachin Tendulkar (34,357) and Kumar Sangakkara (28,016) have scored more runs in international cricket than Kohli.

    Since making his international debut for India against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 18, 2008, Kohli has scored 9230 runs in 123 Tests, 14,066* runs in 299 ODIs, and 4188 runs in 125 T20Is.

    During the ongoing match against Pakistan, before overtaking Ponting, Kohli broke Mohammad Azharuddin’s record of most catches for India in ODIs. During his playing days, Azhar completed 156 catches in 334 matches, whereas Kohli now has 158 catches to his name in 299 matches.

    He also broke Sachin’s record of being the fastest batter to score 14,000 runs in ODIs.

      If Kohli manages to score century in the ongoing match then he will be the first Indian batter to score century in Champions Trophy against Pakistan. Only two batters – Shoaib Malik and Fakhar Zaman – have managed to score century in India-Pakistan Champions Trophy matches played so far.
